The RSCTA Collie Event
May 7th 2006
Did we get wet? Did we care? Did we have fun? Yes, No and a BIG Yes!!!

For the second year in succession, the RSCTA promised "A Day of Agility, Obedience and Fun" and, despite seeing plenty of rain, on Sunday May 7th all those who attended participated with great enthusiasm to make it a day for all to remember.

This year, 25 RSCTA members and their families made the journey to the new venue for the event in the Vale of Belvoir, travelling from all around the country to do so. This year's event was attended by 4 Rough Collies, 20 Smooth Collies and 8 "Honorary Collies for the Day". Despite almost unremitting rain, everyone happily joined in all the fun activities and it was a sign of the success of the day that everyone stayed until the end of the day. Obviously everyone was having too much fin to notice the weather!

In keeping with the previous year's Fun Day, a number of events were held throughout the day offereing something for everyone, inlcuding the honorary collies.

This year's event started with with some exceptionally high standard Competitive Agility Training provided by Amanda Hampson, who is part of the team representing Great Britain at the Agility World Championships 2006. Amanda provided excellent advice for dogs (and handlers!) at all standards of competitive agility, covering contact training, jumping techniques, ways to speed up the slower dogs and ways of dealing with trickier courses. She freely gave her time to help handlers and Collies with specific needs and everyone received some novel ideas and plenty of encouragement to take away with them to help inprove their success in competition.

Once again we were able to offer the opportunity for those attending the Fun Day to tke their Bronze & Gold Kennel Club Good Citizens Tests. Training was provided by Pen Sensky, Jean Tuck and Liz Beaumont and testing was carried out by RSCTA member Penny Evans. The standard of basic obedience was very impressive and it was no surprise to those watching proceedings that a 100% pass rate was achieved!

After lunch, Introductory agility gave people who had done little or no agility the chance to find out what agility is all about and to have a go, with training. This year, Ann Miller provided training for the handlers and Collies that were very new to agility, whilst Pen Sensky and Natalie Silcock provided help and advice to those who had a little more experience but were not yet competing along. Once again, handlers were thrilled to see how quickly their dogs conquered everything they tried.

The day finished with a series of Fun Games organised by Ann Miller & Nataie Silcock. The first game tested the handlers' ability to complete the weaves whilst carrying a sausage on a spoon under the close watch of their dogs after the dogs had completed a few jumps! This was followed by a knockout version of "Fastest Recall" and then "Catching the Biscuit" which the dogs particularly enjoyed!

On top of all this a raffle was held and there was a general opportunity for fellow RSCTA members to meet, many for the first time, discuss all things Collie and simply have a lot of fun with their dogs.

Look out for future RSCTA events on this website!
